OK, so I got behind on the Dalai Lama trip updates...

After Sacred Music Sacred Dance, [livejournal.com profile] mechanchaos and I found our way over to [livejournal.com profile] amberrattus's and [livejournal.com profile] keepersrosered's new place. They were holding a birthday party for [livejournal.com profile] amberrattus, [livejournal.com profile] ninepointsatyr, Nick, and other folks who had Virgo birthdays around that time. Hee, that included me!

Even though we've been living in Rochester since the Fall of 2000, it's still nice to reconnect with folks we knew way back when and to get to know newer faces. It was a lively party with lots of intellectual conversation interspersed with the usual pervertedness that I'd feel so out of place without.

The oddest part of the evening was my choice to drink. I am a paradox. My dad's alcoholism gives me an aversion to the stuff, but my curiosity makes me want to try things out and experiment. Well, the evening's main experiment for me was Bacardi 151. Over a spread of somewhere between 8-10 hours, I had four shots of that. I can swallow the stuff without wincing, and my interest in hot sauce means that it did not burn me as much as it may have burned others. Also, I had a cup of wine mixed with fruit juice on ice, another cup of wine sipped through a freezepop, my first try of (legal) absinthe, and my first try of Mogen David.

By all stretches of my imagination, I should have passed out. Yet, I was no more than moderately tipsy the entire evening. I barely even got the "the world is moving on me" effect. I am attributing this phenomenon to the wonderful assortment of snack foods I partook in throughout that time and the sheer stretch of time over which the above was consumed. By the time I was in the car ride home, I felt sober. ([livejournal.com profile] mechanchaos was driving, not that being sleepy is much better than having previously consumed copious amounts of alcohol. We arrived back at my parents house without incident.)

Again, it was awesome to see everyone, to relax, and to celebrate life. Thank you to Petrov for talk about Russian food, to [livejournal.com profile] ninepointsatyr and Deb for extensive discussion about Slavic and Celtic deities, and to [livejournal.com profile] keepersrosered for assisting my curiosity, reminding me that it's OK to try new things, and providing a safe environment to try in. Thank you to everyone I shared great hugs with too. There's always room for great hugs!
