OK, so a lot of life has been going on here while I wasn't spending all my time on the computer.
On April 7, there was an impromptu gathering at my apartment. I had enough dinner to go around. The in-laws arrived as planned. We all supped and chatted, laughed and hugged. Then it was off to see The Lion King. We had seats in the center section, row J (tenth row). It was amazing. I feel a certain kinship with the character of Rafiki, and I loved how they expanded Rafiki's involvement with African song.
Afterward, Aidan went to stay with my in-laws.
mechanchaos and I had the weekend to ourselves. On the 8th,
dawnstar,
kolys,
gray_wolf,
mechanchaos, and I stormed Applebees... well, we waited in the doorway with our sick and twisted selves until the fellow at the door had enough and found us a table. :) After that, we spent some money at Adventure Landing then returned here for cakes and games.
Lets see... Sometime the next week I had a day or so of flu-ish-ness. When that was gone, I managed to throw my neck out. Ah well. Anyhow, Easter weekend we all got picked up to go to my parents' house. They'd bought a Chevy Equinox, so they decided that their standard Subaru Legacy was ours at $50 a month. Driving practice was... interesting. Thank everything for my husband, for whom it was remembering rather than learning anew. Saturday April 15,
mechanchaos and I got to visit some old friends we hadn't seen in around six years. Perhaps we'll get to visit Buffalo area folks more now that we have a car.
Unfortunately we didn't technically have the car until Tuesday, so my dad didn't let us take it out and about while we were there other than with him in the passenger seat. It's amazing, the DMV can summon up one's image and signature at any of their computer terminals now. I didn't have my license with me. (I felt so stupid getting to Buffalo only to find my pocket empty of wallet.) Thanks to modern technology, I was able to put the car in my name anyway. This is the first car that is officially and legally "mine". I realize it shouldn't matter, but something about that formality tickled me pink anyway.
I can't believe how much my mom spoils us when we're there. If I was full-time vegetarian or vegan I wouldn't be able to take advantage of it. They sprang for Chinese the first night. Then my mom made an enormous rare roast beef with two yorkshire puddings and asparagus. Dessert was a layered confection of angelfood cake, cheesecake flavored pudding, cherry pie filling, and cool whip. Delicious stuff. Oh, and I almost forgot the heavenly, from-scratch buttermilk pancakes with the option of real maple syrup or freshly made blueberry syrup. Mmmmmmmmmm.
mechanchaos drove us back to Rochester on Tuesday evening. Wednesday was a whirlwind of errands including getting Aidan a buzz cut. It felt so liberating just to get out of the house on our own with no busses and no set schedule. One of the days, we went up to Ontario Beach Park so Aidan could play on the playground and we could see the water. Friday, my in-laws were back for another Aidan-y weekend.
Friday night we didn't get around to getting out of the house, but we made up for it on Saturday. We tried out Golden Port Dim Sum for the first time. My taste buds are in love. I don't know if I've ever mentioned it, but I adore doughy things in taste and texture. Steamed buns are love. (The buns we had were pork, custard, and red bean.) We also had shrimp shumai, vegetable spring rolls, shrimp spring rolls, shrimp balls, and curried squid. There was nothing we ordered that I didn't love. Golden Port boasts that all its dim sum are made fresh to order, no reheating. And they do takeout. Mmmmmmmmmm. Dim sum picnic, anyone? Then we wandered around the Village Gate until we wanted a change of scenery. We went to movies 10 and were unimpressed with the non-Aidan selection of inexpensive movies. Then we wandered around Marketplace Mall until we wanted dinner. We were both interested in something non-Asian (even though I could eat Asian food every night...) We remembered Salena's in the Village Gate and decided it would be worth a try. There was a long wait, but once we got in the service was swift. I think I prefer Mex, though. The food is standard Mexican fare. Tasty, but Mex goes the extra mile with their vegetarian selections and gourmet feel. It had been a long day, but we weren't done yet. We were still itching for a movie, so we picked up a copy of the City and found a late showing of V for Vendetta. I liked the film.
Sunday morning, we got back over to
dawnstar's and
kolys's apartment for our last cat-feeding and to check up on the drip. We got to meet the landlord as he stood atop a ladder slathering a tar-like substance on the roof. Instead of going straight home, we went to the parking lot at Kings Park and I finally got around to more driving practice. I stalled out a couple times in the parking lot, but I also made friends with the car, with the clutch, and with the general notion of driving again. The real test was driving home - by the scenic route. I went up Kings Highway to Durand Eastman Park, headed west, made the turns to go over the big new lift bridge, down Lake to Maplewood Drive, and home. I even managed to stop on the hill leading up to our street and start up again with very little rollback. Then I was so happy from that, I forgot to shift right away. Oops. At least I didn't overrev the engine trying. It didn't like me, but it wasn't horrible either.
So far, that's my only street driving. I know I need more practice. At least I don't have my dad in the car here, and I've got a lot of positive vibes on my side. ***pictures many motorized sex toys lined up and pointing skyward, sending their energy in my direction... some of them have happy faces painted on the silicone***
Once Aidan returned, we all went to see The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe at Movies 10. When we stopped for snacks on the way, I realized my bank card was missing. The last place I'd used it was Salena's. In the hurry to finish up dinner and get to see V for Vendetta, I must have left it. Other than that it was a great night.
This morning I had to get to MCC. I had two reference forms to drop off to professors for the 2006 Academic Achievement Awards. It seems they have a special shin-dig for students who graduate with a cumulative average that's over 3.95. So at 1:30pm on Thursday June 1 I get to go and get all formal like. I saw Lee Adnepos in person and he gestured at the forms and papers and said those are all just formalities. Anyone who meets the criteria who also fills out the paperwork in time gets awarded. Exciting stuff.
On the way home, we stopped at Salena's to check about the card. The door said they were closed on Mondays, but a couple people were walking around in there. One very promptly came out to talk to us, took us to talk to the owner, then helped fish around for where they'd stashed it for safekeeping. It was there. Now it's back in my wallet where it belongs, thanks to some very nice men willing to drop what they were doing and help look.
So, that's what I and we have been up to recently. Next step: working on papers for ESC.
