I made something of a "poor-man's" green tea ice cream tonight. With a mortar and pestal, I finely ground about 2 Tablespoons worth of sencha until it was as finely powdered as I could get it. I dished up vanilla ice cream as I would normally, then I sprinkled an even layer of powdered tea over the surface of the ice cream. The flavor blends in each spoonful as I eat it, and I could use the extra tea to powder over some of the lower layers. It makes a fun and slightly exotic alternative to sprinkles or chocolate. Now I wonder what other herbs would work well like that... Mmmm, the experiment-y goodness!

Mmm... ice cream with a subtle kick. :) I'd love to try that sometime. Usually I eat ice cream as a late-evening thing, so the caffeine wouldn't be good for me then... but perhaps as an afternoon treat sometime.

Makes me wonder about ground fresh ginger used in the same way, too.

Ooo. That does sound good. I was thinking of trying herbalist blends, and spice blends.

I'm definitely curious to hear what you come up with! :) Different kinds of mints would be yummy, too. Or fresh cinnamon.

Now I'm wishing I had some ice cream on hand. I'll just have to settle for my fruit & cool-whip. :)

That one definitely worked out well. I'm still debating what to try for today, but [livejournal.com profile] dawnstar's suggestion of fresh ginger sounded good...

Minnnnnnnnnnnnnt.....I have some!!!! Cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg also sound nifty. *wonders about basil as well*

A thing I like to do when I'm in the mood ( usually in the fall ) is to make tea using apple cider as a base. It's kinda like spiced cider, but moreso :)

:) That sounds good. The basil idea sounds neat. We could have a potential new herbalist / ice cream trend on our hands!

I might recommend something I've wanted to try before: Aztec chocolatl, cocoa powder/cinnamon/cayenne blend. Though my mental 'taste' picture makes it a dark chocolate ice cream, minimal sweetness, with the other flavors evenly mixed in.... rather than as a topping.

***nodnods*** Yeah, I'm on a topping kick, thanks to those gigantic buckets of cheap vanilla at the grocery. I've had that recipe on the brain though. Vanilla with chili powder is yummy. I've yet to try mixing cocoa, cinnamon, and cayenne, though.
