This page is a fascinating discussion of group dynamics as they apply to internet interaction. I have the sneaking suspicion that the thoughts therein have broader applications as well.

Yeah, I'm sure I've seen that before. At some point I had planned to implement some of those ideas on ChaoticMUX but never got around to it.
