The Barton Mine (http://www.garnetminetours.com/) is a lot more tourist-friendly than mining in Herkimer. In it's commercial days, they mined industrial-grade garnet at its location, until they hit water and the two mine pits flooded. Now their commercial mining is on a neighboring mountain. The walls of the mine are lined with feldspar with porphyroblasts of hornblende and garnet. Finding garnets is as easy as sluicing water from the pits across the gravel you're walking on. It was a lot of fun to take my son there.
I would love to learn how to do more digging, too, with Herkimer just a couple hours drive away from me.
It sounds like you've had some excellent digging opportunities! It makes me want to save up for a trip Arizona-ward.
