Yesterday, I got to be one of a small number of people in the room when Liam Kieran St John said his first hellos to the world. I am a mother in my own right, but this was the first time I got to witness a birth from a supportive role. I'm still in a state of awe. The strength and power of humanity and of motherhood ought never be underestimated. It is phenomenal to be a part of an entire room both riding on and encouraging one woman's breath, her pain, her strength, her being narrowing to the singular task of bringing forth new life. I would have been holding my breath if I wasn't helping count.
Life is a gift which we give to one another, whether literally in the process of making babies, or in the support we lend to those we love. I feel pride and deep gratitude that
Liam, you come into this world well loved, by family and friends alike. I hope we can make your world colorful and fun, a beautiful place to grow up in. We cannot grant you perfection, but we can grant you all that is in our power to give.
Blessings to all on this birthday!

And as I read the last bit, I realized that, while you're perhaps not actually writing this with the intention that he'll read it, he may well some day. The Internet is an interesting place, and if he googles himself years down the line, he might well come across this and read with tears in his eyes. It's an interesting world he's been born into.
