You know something's up when it's the vet himself and not just a tech on the phone. There's a shadow in his bladder. Our vet got a hold of the emergency clinic's x-rays and saw a shadow.
Typically stones in a cat's bladder have the kinds of minerals in them that show up bright white on an x-ray. Unfortunately, that's not the only kind there is. Some stones are low in the minerals that show up and instead appear as a shadow on the film. To be honest, just the shadow on the film doesn't mean anything. It could be an air bubble.
The good news is, we're proceeding by doing exactly the same thing we have been doing: continuing with the meds and special diet and keeping a close eye on Leo's bodily functions.
The first step, should his symptoms return, would be to have Leo go in for another x-ray, this time with a contrast injected into his bladder to see things better. If such an x-ray shows a stone of that variety, we have two possibilities. Some cats are able to dissolve such things on their own, but we'd have to have several months worth of prescription food instead of just the one. If that doesn't work, surgery to remove it might be in order.
But for now, we wait and we watch. Luckily there's been no more vomiting since the change of meds and no more incessant scratching at the litterbox. I'm praying it's just an air bubble...
