If this isn't too damn much at once, I don't know what is. Last week, I threw my back out. Cue doctor's visit and heavy meds. Cue massive side effects during the middle of my Lit exam. Thankfully the prof let me revisit part 2 of the exam that Thursday.

The back starts getting better, then I come down with the sick of doom. No voice, ears and sinuses throbbing, mucus pouring out of my nose, coughs that exacerbate my sore throat that in turn makes it hard to cough.

Then on Monday the mail comes. [livejournal.com profile] mechanchaos got a speeding ticket last month, for which we paid something to the tune of $145. Here's a letter from the DMV saying that his ticket means 6 points on his license and $300 more to pay for a Driver Responsibility Assessment. What the fuck? Granted it can be broken into three payments, but it's still a pretty steep cost for one speeding ticket.

Then Aidan gets home with a note saying he owes $40 for missing books from the school library. Their due date was April. This is the first notice I've seen. Luckily that fee went away as soon as I called the librarian and asked what was up with fees for books that never came home in the first place. We even searched the apartment and they didn't turn up. Not surprising since most of the books Aidan borrowed stayed in his classroom as supplementary reading materials.

I calmed down from that and settled in to prep for my calculus final which is Thursday (tomorrow) morning at 7:45 am. I finished some work then took some time to relax, thinking I'd have enough time to finish today.

Then today exploded on me.

[livejournal.com profile] mechanchaos was supposed to be going out for some last minute holiday shopping. He comes back in saying the car won't start. He got a jump from a neighbor but there was only a grinding sound. He called a tow company ($40) to get the car into the already-busy shop. They said it would be overnight so a coworker gave him a ride from there.

I was home, venting some online, then offline working on paying bills and math review when the phone rings. I pick it up. I hear what sounds like total dead air. Not even a signal dead air. Then a far off, tiny sound makes its way through the thickness. It's [livejournal.com profile] mechanchaos calling from work, I can make that much out. Some bits I can hear better than others. It's obvious he can hear me just fine.

Then it hits me. How the fuck will I get to my calc final. Yes, I KNOW there are busses. Even at OMGWTF in the morning out to MCC. There are a number of problems though. I have no functional watch. I am already ill. There are 10-20 waits both at the initial bus stop and downtown that are outside in the cold. The overall journey takes about an hour by bus (which is 15-30 min by car).

I tried to get in touch with classmates or the prof about rides, but I got no responses. No one, but no one is willing to get up early to help me out.

I settle back in to doing my math review and I stumble on a horrifying realization. This is an online Calc I course. Somehow over the semester I missed one entire unit. Not only that, but it's a unit that's well-represented on the final (or at least in the review materials). I spent the better part of the evening learning the unit and trying to get it stuck in my head along with all the other info.

Now, online and in communication with [livejournal.com profile] mechanchaos again, it turns out the car's cam shaft is blown. The mechanic called around but couldn't find one except one for $2000 that has 100K miles on it. There was one online for $795 in Texas, but there's no way we could get it up here. We could go into servitude for the rest of our natural lives and put a cheap used car on the credit card, but I REALLY don't want to go there.

Our original holiday plans were to head down to Buffalo Friday night after [livejournal.com profile] mechanchaos got out of work to spend the holiday with my parents. Then he would head back Sunday night since he has to work Monday, and my parents would bring Aidan and I back so that we all could go to my aunt's party in Rochester.

And this post doesn't even begin to take into account the picayune stressors that had me over the line of whelmed without all this...

Now...

I don't know what we will do.

Happy Holidays...

Edit: [livejournal.com profile] gray_wolf is my hero for 12/22/2005. I have a ride to my calc exam! There was one point earlier where I was thinking, "Gifts aside, all I want for Xmas is a ride to the exam!" A hearty thank-you to [livejournal.com profile] gray_wolf!

(Why, yes, I am spamming the exclamation points. This made me very happy.)

But does the cosmic dog poop have a Buddha-nature? ***grin*** Anyhow, I got through the exam. One way or another we're still gonna get to Buffalo for Xmas. Then we'll see what happens from there.
