I wonder what it is that is so dramatically different between jogging in my apartment and jogging outdoors. Indoors, I can do ten minutes all at once. Outside I can barely make it to two minutes before my drive peters out. Perhaps the floor of my apartment is really that bouncy and makes up for my lack of decent running shoes. Maybe the music is a much greater motivator for me than I thought. Maybe going back and forth in a confined space gives my psyche the illusion that there's always only a little bit further to go. Perhaps the slow-down necessary to turn is enough of a rest to sustain me.

Whatever it is, I failed miserably at getting in a solid outdoor run today. I made up for it by going on a hefty walk. I wish the sun had been out for it, but it certainly felt good to get out rather than go back and forth in the apartment. I think working on outdoor running should probably wait until the paths in the park are clear of snow. I doubt that worrying about slipping will help me train myself up.

I get so spoiled by my Mom's cooking. I figure that while I'm there, it's OK to have serving-size portions of whatever she makes. Some of her cooking is so rich, though. I really should make a greater effort to stay within a decent calorie range while I'm there.

Since I so often post about the good times, weight wise, I figure I ought to post this too. It's not all sunshine and roses. Setbacks happen. Good thing there's tomorrow. And the day after that... And...

I find, for me, the music is a big factor. I can go a lot further outdoors with music than without. But I also think that the nature of dashing about one's apartment is inherently less taxing - it's more like a brisk walk with frequent short dashes than like actual jogging. It's still good for you - it must be! I'm not so sure about the other factors; maybe they matter, but those two, in my experience, do make a difference.

That makes sense. I drool over the idea of getting an ipod at some point, but I think finding clothes that fit my shrunken self comes first.

Opposite for me. I'm far too easily distracted if I try to exercise inside my apt. (I also can't run. I would rather walk ten miles than run one.)

Know what worked really well for me? I lived at the bottom of a very steep hill, and walking UP that hill plus another two miles (then working and walking two miles back) burned about 25lbs in 9 months. I may be about 40-50lbs overweight, but I'm a very robust 40-50lbs overweight from all that walking. :P

I never thought I could run. Granted, I'm still a beginner at the outdoors stuff. It was shocking when the dancing around my apartment turned into jogging back and forth. That, and my Dad used to run a lot. It makes me want to work up to a 5K or something. Walking is still my forte, though. I can walk miles and miles in a day and not feel very taxed at all. I live near the gorge. I can't wait until the weather gets warm and dry enough to hike down in the gorge!

Walking is great stuff. I wish my regular winter routes had more hills to them. I think it's awesome that you lost so much with walking!

I can't run outside either. Just jogging across a street is enough for me outside, but inside, I can jog for 3-5 minutes at a stretch. I figured it was just psychosomatic, until you posted this.

It's an interesting phenomenon, whether it is primarily mental and motivational or it is a physical difference. I'd like to work on it, though. ***hugs and loves back***
