It's holiday cleanup time.

Every time I look around the apartment, all I see is clutter. I really need to weed out what we don't use. My Mom's coming here this year. I see this as a good excuse to do all those things I've been putting off for months (years?). Ugh. I hate massive cleanups.

On the creative side, I found all the little cutout snowflakes I did last year and contact-papered them to use as ornaments. I was having enough fun at it to make twelve more. Damn. That's 36 ornaments that I didn't have last year that are unbreakable, light, fun and will look great with lights shimmering through them. I think these will be replacing those lovely but very fragile glass balls on the tree this year. Sure, the cats may want to eat them, but it's easy to make more. One 8.5"x11" page yields twelve of them.

We just got rid of so much stuff. It was very freeing and we donated/freecycled much, but then found a few things worth a little money and craigslisted them and put together enough money for buying Morgan a loft bed on craigslist. It has been a lot of work, but damn good for the feel and liveablity of the house.

We also found better ways to orginize and ditched some things that we liked, but didn't need, like old desktops, and the TV in the bedroom we only use now and again.

We definitely would benefit from doing that. Though the moment's work is just to get this place pared down enough for holiday decorating first and foremost. Then we can do the real dirty work when there's no pressing deadline. I'm glad to hear you were able to free up the place so well!

woohoo safe ornaments

contact paper'd ornaments have GOT to be better for kitties then glass ornaments. :) thats why we didn't get em for our fake tree. solledrache grabbed a recipe and we made cookie ornaments cut by hand with a lil chili spice thrown in(since we lacked foodcolor) to make em a lil red and less bite friendly(but not so much it'd irritate hehe).

Re: woohoo safe ornaments

I grew up loving the glass ones, but I still get PTSD-ish from the year the cats knocked over the tree three times! I can't remember how many glass shards I needed to clean up that year.

My mom made gingerbread cookie ornaments one year. Down side of that, though, would be Aidan wanting to eat them too (even though I remember Mom warning me that they weren't made to be edible...)

These appeal to my apparent liking for cut paper projects. Maybe it's just that I have a friendly relationship with my x-acto knife? Eh, in any case, I've been having a measure of fun with 'em.
